8 April 1746: After receiving reports that the level of the River Spey had subsided, Prince William Augustus, Duke of Cumberland ordered his army to move out from Aberdeen and began the march north towards Inverness. He would be supported by Commodore Thomas Smith’s warships and supply ships offshore.
8 April 1820: While escorting five Radical prisoners from Paisley to Greenock jail, the Port Glasgow Militia came under attack by a crowd of Greenockians determined to free them. Upon reaching the jail the militia opened fire on the crowd causing eight deaths and wounding ten. Later that day, a large crowd stormed the jail and freed the prisoners.
