14 April 1582: James VI of Scotland signed a royal charter which gifted old ecclesiastical revenues to the burgh of Edinburgh to establish a college. It would lead to the establishment of Edinburgh University which would open in October 1583.
14 April 1746: Charles Edward Stuart left Inverness and established his headquarters at Culloden House and ordered all Jacobite forces in the area to concentrate on the grounds of the house.
14 April 1746: The Duke of Cumberland’s army arrived at Nairn while Commodore Thomas Smith’s supporting warships and supply vessels dropped anchor offshore. The navy had supplied Cumberland’s artillery with grapeshot to be used alongside round shot and canister.
