4 April 1406: Robert III died at Rothesay Castle shortly after receiving the news that his son and heir James had been captured by pirates while en route to France.

4 April 1661: The death at Balgonie Castle in Fife of Alexander Leslie, 1st Earl of Leven. Leven had risen to the rank of field marshal in the Swedish army during the 30 Years’ War and commanded the Scottish Covenanter army during the Wars of the Three Kingdoms.
