9 May 1645: a Royalist army commanded by James Graham, Marquis of Montrose heavily defeated a Scottish Covenanter force under Major-General Sir John Urry at the Battle of Auldearn, outside Nairn

9 May 1719: Royal Navy warships Worcester, Enterprise and Flamborough under the command of Commodore Charles Boyle sailed up the Sound of Sleat and navigated the Kyle Rhea narrows before anchoring in Loch Alsh ready to move against the Jacobite-held Eilean Donan Castle.

9 May 1746: Captain John Fergusson commanding the Royal Navy bomb vessel Furnace sailed up Loch Nevis in Lochaber and sent a party of Argyll militia ashore to burn the home of MacDonald of Barisdale.
