28 March 1560: Under the terms of the Treaty of Berwick (27 February 1560), an English army under Lord Grey crossed the border into Scotland to support the Scottish Lords of the Congregation and help them expel a French army that was defending the regency of Mary of Guise and opposing the Scottish reformation. Lord Grey’s army would link up with Scottish forces near Prestonpans before moving to besiege the French forces at the port of Leith, which was also placed under a naval blockade.
