13 May 1568: Mary, Queen of Scots was defeated in her attempt to regain the throne from her son James VI and his supporters at the Battle of Langside, outside Glasgow. Mary’s army, led by Archibald Campbell, Earl of Argyll, was defeated by a much smaller force led by her half-brother James Stewart, Earl of Moray and regent for James VI. Following the battle Mary went into exile and captivity in England.
