Virtual tours of Culloden battlefield to launch January 2023

The National Trust for Scotland (NTS) has announced that virtual tours of the Culloden battlefield are to be launched at the end of this month, allowing people from all over the world to tour the site from the comfort of their own homes.

It was on Culloden Moor on 16 April 1746 that the Jacobite army of Charles Edward Stuart was defeated by government forces under Prince William Augustus, Duke of Cumberland bringing to an end the House of Stuart’s aim of regaining the British throne from the House of Hanover. It was the final battle of the Jacobite period and the last pitched battle to be fought on British soil.

Gail Cleaver, operations manager at Culloden, said: “Providing inspiring heritage visitor experiences is an important part of what we are working to do at the National Trust for Scotland, and this amazing new virtual tour means that there are more chances for people to experience and benefit from this beautiful place, wherever they are in the world.”

“This has certainly been a challenge over the last few years due to the pandemic, which has given us a real focus on exploring innovative ways to bring the important story of the Battle of Culloden to as wide an audience as possible.”
